GLS Language and Logistics Team in Action

GLS awarded U.S. Army Intelligence and Security Command linguist contract

Global Linguist Solutions (GLS) is a joint venture of DynCorp International and McNeil Technologies. The company was formed to manage an Army linguist contract that has a potential revenue value of up to $4.6 billion over five years. DI owns 51 percent of the company.

The previous contract holder, L-3 Services, Inc., is a subcontractor, which will facilitate a seamless program transition in Iraq. L-3 joins nine other subcontractors, and each contributes specialized capabilities to GLS’ integrated team management.

GLS is a strategic partnership. DI brings the logistics capacity to go anywhere and the ability to operate successfully in the most challenging environments, and McNeil brings linguistic skills on an unprecedented level. Together, they offer outstanding leadership and management for a program of vital importance to U.S. national security.

The U.S. Army Intelligence and Security Command authorized GLS to proceed on March 13, and the immediate mission is to provide Arabic language interpreters for U.S. troops in Iraq. The company will hire up to 7,000 interpreters in Iraq, and more than 2,000 Arab Americans in the U.S. to serve in Iraq. GLS has opened four regional recruiting centers to reach U.S. citizens and green card holders.

In addition to interpreters, GLS will hire support staff to provide security, maintenance, human resources, contracting, procurement, finance, and IT services. The program management office is in Falls Church, Virginia, and more than 80 Arab Americans are on the management and recruiting team.

GLS President Maj. Gen. James A. “Spider” Marks, U.S. Army (Ret.) was commandant of the U.S. Army Intelligence Center at Fort Huachuca, Arizona, from 2001-2004 and spent a year in Iraq as the senior intelligence officer. VP Operations Mike Simone retired from the U.S. Army in 2005 as commandant of the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, California.

In Baghdad, Brian Greene will serve as Iraq site manager and Frank Cumberland as deputy Iraq site manager.

GLS is creating an infrastructure to meet the requirements of this large and complex contract, and, at the same time, establishing a large company. The goal is to provide essential skills that the U.S. military will need both now and in the future.

“This is noble work. It is an honor to be selected to perform this service,” Marks said.

GLS’ role is more than a mission – it is a critical calling and an essential element of reconstruction, peace, and progress in Iraq.
