DI has been supporting programs to foster peace and stability in Africa since 2001. We work closely with the U.S. State Department and cooperate with the United Nations, the Africa Union, the Economic Organization of West African States, and non-governmental organizations.

Today, there are nearly 400 DI employees working in Africa in Ethiopia, Liberia, Nigeria, Somalia, and Sudan. Our strengths in logistics, aviation, and security, and our ability to work in remote and austere locations, are well suited for challenging projects in Africa.

In 2007, we established a regional office in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. We also have an office in Kampala, Uganda, to support our work in Southern Sudan and Somalia.

Current Programs

  • Sudan Peace Initiative Grant – This State Department grant provides funding, training, and logistical support for the Sudanese People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) and the Sudanese Liberation Movement (SLM). The grant helped secure the Comprehensive Peace Agreement in 2005. DI was instrumental in that effort, and continues to support the peace process as Sudan heads toward national elections in July 2009.

  • CIVPOL Sudan – The U.S. State Department’s Civilian Police program works with the United Nations Mission in Sudan. DI legal and law enforcement specialists in Juba provide training and mentoring.

  • Akwa Ibom Airport – DI is building an airport in Nigeria’s Akwa Ibom province. It will include the largest aircraft maintenance facility on the continent.

  • Africa Peacekeeping – DI supports many State Department projects that are designed to foster peace and stability in Africa under this program.

    • Africa Union Logistics – A DI advisor in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, works with the Africa Union on logistics, peace, and security.

    • Liberia Security Sector Reform – After decommissioning the previous army, DI recruited, vetted, and is now training the new Armed Forces of Liberia, from entry training through officer candidate school. We also have trained 120 civil servants for the new Ministry of National Defense.

    • ECOWAS – Economic Community of West African States – a DI advisor in Abouja, Nigeria, works with ECOWAS on logistics, peace, and security.

    • Somalia Peacekeeping – DI provides logistics, training, and support for Africa Union peacekeepers in Mogadishu, Somalia.

    • Sudan Security Sector Transformation – DI manages the construction and renovation of facilities to support the Sudan People’s Liberation Army in Juba.

    • Sudan Assessment and Evaluation Commission – In Juba and Khartoum, DI supports the commissioner and commission facilities related to evaluation of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement.

    • Sudan Basic Staff Skills – DI trains SPLA senior officers in Juba.

    • Driver Training – DI staff members in Juba train SPLA soldiers in vehicle maintenance and operation.
